The Canon 70D is a pretty capable DSLR for shooting video. Here’s how I set it up to get the most out of its video shooting potential.
If you would like to learn more about shooting video with the Canon 70D I have developed a video course going into more detail including;
- Menu settings
- Pictures styles
- How to expose for video
- Technique and more
You can find out more and watch a chapter for free by following the link below.
You can also download this Cheat-sheet for free covered in the above video Download
Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks for the videos, they are really helpful.
If I want to do some night shots, is there a specific lens I should buy?
The Canon shop in Bangkok recommended EF40mm f/2.8 STM. Does that seem ok to you?
There’s not really a specific lens but try and get one with a low f-stop such as f2.8 lens as these allow more light in. They are unfortunately more expensive but are generally better quality lens that should last you a long time.
I’ve been going a little nuts trying to shoot low light video. The lowest f-stop lense I have is canon 50 mm f/1.8. I’ve made my settings identical to what you recommend but the video still comes out very grainy.
Is the 50mm f/1.8 too low quality to expect good video? Very much looking forward to whatever to you putting together to give more detailed directions on how to shoot in low light.
The Canon 50mm f1.8 lens is an excellent low light lens. Your problem may be the camera automatically using a high ISO setting. Try setting it manually and limiting it to a maximum of 6400. Hope that helps.

Thank goodness for no nonsense, no pretentious bs and down to earth people like you. You have helped me more than any manual could, which is good because I am filming using the canon 70d tomorrow. You sir, are a lifesaver.
thanks
